Working From Home With Young
Children
In today’s world, it is almost a necessity to have two
incomes coming into the home. But when parents take the
time to evaluate the cost of child care, transportation,
and more, some parents decide that the best way to make
ends meet is to take care of their children while, at the
same time, working at home.
This plan has its obvious benefits but it also has its
downsides as well. It can become increasingly difficult to
balance both work and family at the same time. So how to
you meet your personal goals while still keeping the
children happy?
Keep a Schedule
If you’re just coming out of the workforce, this can be
relatively easy for you since you’re familiar with keeping
a tight schedule from your previous job. But if you’ve been
a stay at home Mom for awhile and have been out of the
working environment for some time, this can prove to be a
challenge. It is incredibly important however in order for
you to keep on track.
When you keep a schedule you can balance your work and
family life very well. Your children might not need your
attention all of the time but by setting aside certain
times of day dedicated to them, it will make you day, and
theirs, more pleasant.
Use your time wisely though. For example, making dinner
for your family is a lot quicker when you do it alone, yes,
but it can become an activity that you AND your children
participate in together. Pre-schoolers especially find this
very entertaining (I speak from experience here
). Use time when they’re at school to work, or if they’re
too young to go to school full-time, use their nap times or
early evening hours to work when you have help.
Get Out of the House
If its possible, take the time every day to actually get
out of the house. Take a walk around the block, if you need
some exercise you can run while they ride their tricycle,
bike or Big Wheel. Go to the mall for a bit and play in the
play areas that most malls have nowadays. Visit with
friends who have children your age.
It will do wonders for both of your moods to actually
get away from the constant demands of the household and
give your children your undivided attention.
Visit other people
When you work at home, it’s very easy to get caught up
in balancing your work and your children. Not to mention
the countless other things you have to do each day. Take
time out to see people. Go to the park with a neighbor or
find groups that the both of you can participate in at your
local gym or elsewhere. You need that adult
interaction.
Share the Work
If you need to hire someone to take care of your child
while you work, then by all means don’t feel guilty doing
so. You need time to focus and that’s not always possible
with a young one vying for your attention every five
minutes.
It is not easy to work from home with young children.
The pros and cons should be carefully considered. However,
if you feel it suits your family then your children WILL
thank you. You will enjoy many aspects of your children
that other parents miss and your children will benefit from
knowing they always have a parent home for them.
